Sugars

Often times I talk about what things you should be eating, but I’m going to take a little different approach this time. I want to talk about a few things you should stay away from.

(P.S. I recorded a podcast recently about foods you can substitute instead of eliminate from your diet. Check it out, at the bottom of this post, it expands on the ideas below.)

If you’re trying out that new protein bar, protein shake, or really anything you’re putting your body… there’s a few things you should stay clear of.

(1) Soy anything

Most soy on the market, very similar to corn, is genetically modified (GMO). That means someone has gone in to modify the soy to make it grow faster, more abundant, and be less susceptible to insects. I’m not going to get into much detail here, just stay away from it.

(2) Artificial Colors + Flavors

Colors are chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color, and flavors are cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors. Sometimes you will even see “And other natural flavors.” That always gets me worried, because they could probably list the ingredient using less letters than just writing out that sentence. I’d give you some examples here, but there are literally hundreds of them.  One word of advice is if you can’t pronounce it, be afraid.

(3) Artificial Sweeteners

This is the big one. The are highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving. The most common include Acesulfame-K, As-partame, Equal, Nutra-Sweet, Sac-charin, Sweet’n Low, Sucralose, Splenda, Sorbitol.

If the product you have contains any of these, put it back and look for one that doesn’t. There’s plenty of companies that don’t use the above items to make it look and taste good.  Remember, these chemicals are like Viagra to cancer.
