In my last article we were talking about interviews. I wanted to continue by showing you two lists of questions from my last two interviews. You may think that this won’t help you if you’e going for a different position, but every interview i’ve done always uses the same format. What you learn from here, WILL help you for your next interview.

First, these questions were from my detective interview last year.

1) Organization skills; Tell us about a time you were handling multiple things at once.

2) What has been your biggest accomplishment that has made this department look good?

3) Tell us about a time you dealt with an upset citizen.

4) What would you want to add to your personnel package?

5) What would you like to take out of your personnel package?

6) Tell us about a time when you spoke in an unplanned community group.

7) What interview techniques would you use if you thought a victim, suspect, or witness wasn’t telling you the truth?

 

These are the questions from my sergeant interview last year.

 

1) Pick one of the department’s goals and tell me why you think it’s important.

2) Tell us about a time you had a disagreement with a supervisor.

3) Tell us about a time you had a disagreement with a coworker.

4) Tell us about the importance of gaining trust in the community, and how you will accomplish that.

5) How would you monitor and motivate officers?

6) How would you prevent harassment and bias, and how would you enforce or take action when you see it.

7) Tell us about a time you took charge at a tactical incident?

8) How did an assignment you’ve done in the past prepare you for the job of Sergeant.

9) What do you think the job of a sergeant is and why?

 

Here is my list for my field training officer interview a few years ago.

1) Tell us about a time you dealt with cultural diversity and how you were able to overcome it.

2) Tell us which of our core values is most important, and how you would implement it.

3) If you see an officer slamming a suspect onto a car, what would you do?

4) What community problem are you most proud of for solving?

5) What do you think the job of a field training officer is?

6) How would you know if a probationer isn’t getting it?

 

Let’s quickly talk about the closing statement now. You have a good 20-30 seconds MAX to wow your interviewers. Sit down and practice this closing statement and make sure it doesn’t go beyond that. You have to stand out in this category, don’t be like the masses! Thanking them for their time is NEVER a good idea.  Being confident is ALWAYS important. Stuck on this point? To sum this all up, the best way to prepare is to look at these types of questions and prepare at least 2 “Stories” of when you implemented that concept in the past. The questions may be worded differently, but they are asking for the same concepts. Study those guides and manuals, and get with someone who is actually doing that job now. They are in that position for a reason!

Above all be positive. You are ready for this promotion, you just have to prove to those 2-3 people in front of you why they should pick YOU!
